Rest Days and the Overtraining Trap

Young athletes get better between workouts, not during them. Training breaks the body down; food and rest build it back stronger. Skip the rebuilding and you get a slower, sadder, more injury-prone player.

The warning signs

  • Performance dropping despite more practice
  • Persistent soreness, heavy legs, dragging at school
  • Irritability about basketball they used to love
  • Trouble sleeping despite being exhausted

The guidelines we follow

  • At least 1-2 full rest days a week
  • Hours of organized sport per week should not exceed the child's age
  • A month or two per year fully away from structured basketball

In defense of other sports

The single-sport, year-round path produces more burnout and overuse injuries, not more pros. Most elite basketball players were multi-sport kids. Soccer feet, swimmer lungs, and gymnast balance all show up on the court later. Let the off-season actually be off.
